Throughout the course of the year, I made several changes to the original shot list and storyboards that I drew up at the initial planning stage, until months later I completed the final cut. This changes were both spontaneous, creative decisions whilst filming or informed by my focus group and audience feedback.
Here are all of the original storyboards, up until the bridge section (as in the initial shot list the final section was undetermined due to character issues at this point)
| The Introduction board. Text shots in the room and trees remained, and initial idea of "intro shots" remained, although these changed in content. |
| First Verse board. The phone conversation remains in the final cut, as do the ones including miss-en-scene such as the top right shot, but ones including the guitar were quickly omitted. Tom's introduction is also seen here, and the bottom right was filmed and included in the first draft, but was then cut to include more of the relationship. |
| First chorus into second verse. Some ideas still blank at initial stage, with the cliff/guitar section again rendered obsolete. This section changed more to include impressive shots of Tom in the forest and interesting editing in post production. |
| Second verse. On the whole the idea of Elliott's character leaving and going to the Church remains in tact, with a few changes - the omission of the sign post shot for other ones entering the Church, and then creating more links with Tom's side by including the friends. |
| Second chorus. Shots like running in the forest and the pews in the Church remain, whilst again the cliff shots are removed. |
| Instrumental section. Tom's friends trying to find him was moved further forward into the second chorus, to place more of an emphasis on Tom's character on the Beach, which still remains. |
Each of the storyboards has a sketch of a shot or idea and then annotations pertinent to the relevant shot on the shot list. The main change was the immediate omission of the man playing the guitar on the cliff, as I realised that logistically this would be difficult, it would be hard to film, and my focus group thought it was irrelevant to constructing the narrative that is sought after in this genre. The initial shots in the introduction storyboard remain, where the text is being displayed, and other shots dotted through the storyboards can also still be found in the final cut - the church section, the text sending, the group of friends and the conversation between the man and girl. The other changes were mainly adjustments, and although all these shots were filmed, such as the signpost at the church section to represent indecision, not all were included, because whilst editing I felt that another shot would look better in its place or would contribute more to the narrative - such as Elliott arriving at the Church or substituting this for more time in the Church itself, in this instance. Other shots were simply creative ones during the shoot that were entirely spontaneous but natural also, such as the "leap-frogging" in the final chorus. It was not noted down anywhere for this to happen, the group simply did whilst I was filming, and I thought it enraptured the mood of the final chorus well and looked good after editing. Other changes were informed by the focus group, such as making the link between the girl and man stronger by including more shots whilst also leaving out excess shots of the man in the room to avoid it being repetitive.
